Good Musical Ideas Not For ContraBass
When I read this I laughed my ass off. This is from an interview the composer, Bear McCreary, held with the one and only Stu Phillips (Battlestar Galactica, Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls, Knight Rider). It was a week before the Golden State Pops Orchestra Halloween Concert of 2009.
Bear McCreary: Tell us about about the piano concert we’re going to hear and what inspired you to write it.
Stu Phillips: It’s a very long story. It was originally conceived as a concerto for four basses. Dennis Trembly of the LA Phil had asked if I might take a shot at writing something for the contra bass. When it became obvious that trying to get four competent bass players together for rehearsals was going to be a problem, I gave up on the project. The music laid around in a carton for several years, until one day, when I was reorganizing things, I came across the music. When I revisited the score I thought, “what a waste of ideas.” so I began rewriting the music as a set of variations for piano. In 1998 I recorded it at the Skywalker ranch with a symphony orchestra and a 16 year old pianist.
Personally, I would have loved to hear a quartet-bass concerto written by Stu, but through experience I feel most composers assume us bassists just dwell in the low end and can't hold up when it comes to execution. Especially, when we are compared to piano. Well, just what we need MORE PIANO MUSIC! I'm jokin'. It's probably a great piece, but still great to get some insight about my beloved instrument from the man himself.

New Gear and So What If Its Late
I'm pretty sure wise men would say nothing at 4:42 in the morning because they were all too busy working. i think its only normal for atypical minds to work this late at night. not to imply my minds atypical - half the time i dont know what im talking about, let alone doing and most of the time im really not sure so really 4:43 in the morning is the only time i know when to work these days. even if its not work; im nocturnal and proud.
Been drooling over gear for a while. openlabs, mpcs, maschine, ableton software, reason software, xtreme drums/software, apc40, mpd 20, korg touch something, moogerfoogers, alesis hr-16s. my akai has bitten the bullet... well, not yet, but its about done its last beat and i must upgrade to put out some heat aka next level polybeat hipster gizmo chacha with extra flavor time!
i listened to about two hours of nosaj thing and prefuse 73 (among many others) and i have to say nosaj takes the cake... or well a brownie covered in synths, delays and nervous basslines that prick some part of my back i cant seem to reach, ever. prefuse was kinda ominous or dull, but i think i was listening to his/her? older stuff. maybe more fresh at that time. then again ominous doesnt have to bad, right? i would say some of my tracks are pretty threatening. do i write to please. maybe? nonetheless, both - awesome producers.
the akai apc 20.
i need one of these. runs strictly for abelton. no, not that thats a bad thing. i just have to learn abelton now. more reasons to barricade my life to a room filled with toys. if this room was a mansion it would only be a cage with gold bars.
then again a mansion would be pleasant.
along with all that i have MUMKAI shows back to back in april.
Three shows, one week, bottle and cans, clap your hands, two turntables, microphone.
GSPO coming up and im thrilled for that too. sick of playing with myself. i wanna jam, play. even if its dorkestra.
